A High-Altitude Winter Tale at Jagdschloss Kühtai, Austria

There is a specific, crystalline silence that only exists at 2000 meters, where the air is so thin and pure that every sound feels suspended. For Bénédicte and Patrick - a French-Austrian couple whose history is written in the peaks - the Jagdschloss Kühtai was not just a venue, but a sanctuary. Perched above the clouds in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps, this former hunting lodge is a place of raw stone and aristocratic history, surrounded by the dizzying white of active ski pistes. We arrived to find a landscape of stark contrasts: the blinding midday sun reflecting off the glaciers and the deep, centuries-old shadows of the lodge’s interiors. Our goal was to capture that specific alpine tension, the meeting of rugged mountain life and a very refined, very personal elegance.

THE GEOMETRY OF THE ALPS

The Jagdschloss Kühtai is an anchor in the landscape. To photograph it is to negotiate with the scale of the mountains. We spent the hours before the ceremony watching the sun move across the Tyrolean valleys, identifying the exact window when the light hits the lodge's facade to create the perfect architectural depth. The aesthetic of this day was defined by the union of textures: the delicate silk of Bénédicte’s Jesus Peiro skirt against the unyielding ice, and the sharp lines of Patrick’s tailoring against the organic curves of the snowdrifts.

We treated the ski pistes not as a backdrop, but as a graphic element of the narrative. Using wide perspectives, we framed the couple as two solitary figures in an immense, white territory, emphasizing the intimacy of their bond against the grandiosity of the Tyrol. It was a study in minimalism, how to tell a story with nothing but a blue sky, a historic stone wall, and the quiet presence of two people in love.

THE BLESSING OF THE BLIZZARD

Mid-ceremony, the weather made its own decision. The bright alpine sun vanished, replaced by a sudden, swirling snowfall that transformed the world into a living painting. Most would see a blizzard as a challenge; we saw it as a gift, a natural filter that softened the world and turned the vast landscape into an intimate cocoon. We adjusted our perspective instantly, moving from the architectural scale to the micro-details: the way a snowflake caught on the dark wool of Patrick’s tuxedo, or the hazy, ethereal glow of Bénédicte’s hair accessories through the flurry.

The sound of their friend’s guitar seemed to carry differently through the falling snow, and our shooting followed that rhythm, tight, emotional, and focused on the atmospheric haze. As the couple retreated into the warmth of the Jagdschloss for the reception, the contrast became the story. The firelit, wood-paneled rooms felt even more prestigious against the wild Tyrolean winter raging just beyond the glass. It was a transition from the statuesque to the kinetic, a celebration that remained impeccably elegant even as the elements tried to reclaim the mountain.

A French-Austrian union at the summit of the world, where the elegance of the lodge met the raw power of the Alps.
